Growing up, my mom used to wedge a wooden broomstick into our garage door rails every night.
It was her way of keeping us safe
But it created a different problem: every morning when I left for school, I’d forget about the broomstick, hit the garage opener, and the whole door would jam against it. Every. Single. Time.
Even as a kid, I remember thinking:
“There has to be a better way.”
But like most childhood ideas, it got buried under school, life, and eventually my engineering career.
Years later, when I moved into my first home, the broomstick memory hit me all over again.
I had tools in the garage. I had projects I cared about. I had people I wanted to protect.
And I started researching garage security — only to discover how shockingly easy it was to break into a garage.
A few seconds, a coat hanger, and the whole house was vulnerable.
